Spirit Circles in Ultimate Frisbee:
What:
A spirit circle is a tradition in Ultimate Frisbee where a circle is formed after a game to reflect on and discuss the spirit of the game. At the SESAA Jamboree it will be a time for players to express gratitude, offer compliments and build camaraderie with their opponents.
Who:
All players from both teams come together and form a joined circle of alternating players. At the beginning, coaches may be a part of the circle to help facilitate the process but as the athletes become more comfortable and competent with the process, the team may appoint one of their players as the spirit captain who can help to lead the circle.
Why:
The spirit circle is an integral part of Ultimate Frisbee culture and emphasises the importance of fair play, integrity, and community within the sport. It helps foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging players to uphold the principles of the game both on and off the field.
When:
The spirit circle will take place immediately after each the game played in the jamboree.
Where:
The circle will be formed in the center of the field where the game was played.
How:
During the spirit circle, players take turns sharing their thoughts and experiences about the game, focusing on the values of respect, fair play, and good sportsmanship. They may express appreciation for their opponents, acknowledge exceptional plays, or discuss any issues that arose during the game, such as controversial calls or disagreements. The spirit circle will conclude with a collective cheer or applause, symbolising unity and mutual respect. The spirit prizes may also be shared at this time.
